ARTIST STATEMENT.
My body of work is a scrapbook of self-discovery. In a period of my life where I’m expected to know who I am, I’ve struggled with navigating identity as a biracial Latina immersed in cultures with conflicting values. Through multiple vehicles of art-making, my work is meant to encourage audiences to embrace the intersectionality and nuances of their own identities.
I am inspired by community storytelling, prioritizing leads who identify as BIPOC. Often using dance and film to focus on individual experience, my work is intended to challenge audiences to consider their own familiarity with self-image, belonging, and to generate a community of thought through these introspections. My practice and movement vocabulary are influenced by the intersection of film, hip-hop culture, and modern dance practices; a junction I embrace after years of being expected to choose one over the other. |
